1. Motor humming but nothing moves?

A steady hum with zero movement is a dead starting capacitor in nine cases out of ten. The capacitor gives the tubular motor its opening kick, and UAE heat kills them early — a steel shutter box over a west-facing shopfront can pass 60°C inside on an August afternoon.

Switch off at the isolator and stop pressing the button, because a humming motor is stalled and drawing full current into a winding that can't turn. The swap itself is quick and sits at the low end of the AED 300–700 motor-repair range.

2. Worked this morning, dead after a few cycles?

That's the thermal overload doing its job. Tubular shutter motors are rated for roughly four minutes of continuous running before an internal cut-out opens, and in summer a hot box gets there in two or three back-to-back cycles.

The fix is patience — leave it alone for about 20 minutes and it resets itself. What matters is the pattern.

Tripping once on a busy delivery morning is normal; tripping every day on light use means the motor is fighting dragging guides or failing windings, and that is a service call, not a habit to live with.

3. Grinding or jammed after a sandstorm?

Sand packs into the side guides and between slats, and the shamal season refills them faster than anyone sweeps. Safe to do yourself — brush the visible guide channels clean, wipe the bottom bar, and run the shutter once while standing at the stop button.

4. Remote pressed, nothing at all — no hum, no click?

Test the wired wall button first. If the wall button works, the motor is fine and the fault is the remote or the receiver. Change the remote battery before anything else — most shutter remotes run a CR2032 coin cell or a small 27A.

If a fresh battery and a second remote both fail, the receiver board has likely cooked, which is common in unventilated shutter boxes here. A replacement remote costs AED 150–350, and programming an extra one is AED 100–150 — free if it's done during any service visit.

5. Power cut — what's the safe way to open it?

Look for the manual override at the motor end of the box — a hanging chain, or an eyelet that takes a removable crank handle. Isolate the power first so the supply can't return mid-crank, then wind slowly; a three-metre shopfront shutter can take more than a hundred turns, which is normal.

Never unbolt the motor or free the curtain from the axle to drop it open — a released curtain is a falling weight of forty kilos or more. If your shutter has no override fitted, add one before the next DEWA outage, not during it.

6. Stops half-way, or won't quite reach the floor?

A clean, quiet stop in the wrong place is limit-switch drift — the motor still thinks it has arrived. Mechanical limit gearboxes drift with vibration and age, and every drift compounds across thousands of cycles.

Re-setting is owner-safe only when the motor has external adjustment screws and you have the manual for that exact model, because one turn too far drives the curtain past its guides at full torque.

If the stopping point wanders from week to week, the limit gearbox itself is worn, and that repair sits inside the AED 300–700 motor band.

7. Curtain knocked out of its side guides?

Stop using the shutter now — this is the one fault where the next button press does real damage. A trolley or a van mirror clips the curtain, an end slat leaves the guide, and every further cycle folds the curtain more and pulls it off square.

Don't push slats back in by hand while the motor is connected, and don't run it once more to see how bad it is. Photograph it, leave it exactly where it stopped, and book the visit. Re-seating and truing usually stays inside the standard repair range unless slats have creased.
