Genuine DORMA and dormakaba door hardware sells in the UAE at wide price spreads, and most of the spread is explained by three things — closer class, glass weight, and whether the part is actually genuine.

An honest note on model names

The UAE market still asks for closers by their classic DORMA names — TS 68, TS 73, TS 83, TS 93 — but DORMA merged into dormakaba in 2015, and the current catalogue consolidates and renames lines over time. Some classic references are still current, some are superseded by an equivalent.

We quote by duty class and confirm the exact current model and its availability at order time, rather than promising a specific reference that may have been replaced last quarter. A supplier who guarantees every classic model number off the shelf, forever, is usually selling copies.

Overhead closers — the TS families

An overhead closer is a hydraulic arm that closes the door at a controlled speed and latches it. Under EN 1154, closers are rated by force size — EN 1 to EN 7 — and the right size depends on door width and weight. In the UAE the spec matters more than in Europe.

A closer on a shopfront in Deira cycles hundreds of times a day at 45 degrees, and cheap hydraulic oil thins in that heat until the door slams. Sand working into the pinion does the rest.

TS 68 and TS 73 class

The standard-duty range for internal office doors and lighter external doors, with force sizes around EN 2-4. Indicative 2026 ranges — supply AED 150-450 per closer, supply-and-fit AED 300-700.

TS 83 class

The heavy-duty rack-and-pinion workhorse for wide, heavy or wind-loaded external doors, adjustable up to around EN 7. Indicative supply AED 400-900, supply-and-fit AED 600-1,300.

TS 93 cam-action class

The premium line. Cam action makes a heavy door feel light to open while still closing firmly, which is why it ends up on hotel, clinic and school doors with accessibility requirements. Floor springs — the BTS family

A floor spring does the closer's job from below — a spring-and-hydraulic unit set into a box in the floor, with a spindle that physically carries the door leaf.

It is the standard way to hang a frameless glass door, and the BTS family is what most UAE glass shopfronts and office entrances actually run on.

Replacement is heavier labour than an overhead closer because the floor box has to be opened, and on marble or porcelain the tile work around it is part of the job.

Glass-door fittings — patches, rails and locks

Frameless glass doors hang on patch fittings — the clamped corner plates that connect a 10 or 12 mm toughened leaf to the floor spring below and the pivot above. Rails do the same job along the full edge of heavier leaves and overpanels.

The metal is trivial to copy badly, and this is the one hardware category where a failure can mean a glass leaf on the floor.

Patch sets, rails and corner locks

Indicative supply AED 300-900 for a top-and-bottom patch set with pivot, AED 600-1,500 fitted. Rails and overpanel fittings run AED 500-1,500 per leaf supplied depending on length and finish, and corner locks or strike patches add AED 200-600.

Genuine vs copy — why originals matter on glass

Copies of DORMA closers and floor springs are everywhere in the UAE market, often in packaging that borrows the logo. The problem is not badge pride.

A closer is a calibrated hydraulic device — closing force, latching speed and backcheck depend on machined tolerances and oil that holds its viscosity through a UAE summer. Copies drift.

The door slams in month three, or stops latching against a sandstorm breeze, and on a floor spring the failure mode is worse because the unit is carrying toughened glass over a doorway.

Markings, weight and finish

Genuine dormakaba units carry crisp etched or cast markings — model, force size, CE and EN 1154 references — plus serialised packaging; copies show a shallow, blurry logo and no force data.

Genuine bodies are dense cast aluminium with a uniform finish, and copies are visibly lighter with rough casting lines. If two identical-looking closers differ in weight in your hands, one of them is not genuine.
